Myanmar Unveils Preliminary Population Data for 2024 Census

Yangon, Dec 31 (NationPress) The preliminary results of Myanmar's 2024 population and housing census reveal a total population of 51,316,756 on census night, September 30, 2024, according to a recent announcement from the Department of Population part of the Ministry of Immigration and Population.
The total comprises 32,191,407 individuals who were directly counted, along with 19,125,349 individuals estimated via remote sensing technology for locations where enumeration was unfeasible, as stated in the announcement.
These provisional numbers will act as a reference point until the final census report is made available.
The initial findings suggest that, after accounting for the estimated population of uncounted regions, 31 percent of Myanmar's populace resides in urban settings, while 69 percent continues to live in rural locales.
The Yangon region exhibits the highest percentage of urban inhabitants at 68 percent, followed by Kachin State, Mon State, and Nay Pyi Taw, each boasting 35 percent urban residency.
The census night was established for September 30, 2024, with the counting phase taking place from October 1 to 15. However, due to logistical difficulties and security issues, the counting period was extended in certain regions until the second week of December.
The 2024 population and housing census employed mobile tablets loaded with a computer-assisted personal interviewing system, removing the necessity for paper forms. This digital strategy facilitated real-time data transmission to a central database.
Since its independence, Myanmar has executed national censuses in 1973, 1983, and 2014, as per the department's records.
In related news, local agencies recently reported that Myanmar welcomed 977,154 foreign tourists during the first eleven months of 2024, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. This year's foreign tourist numbers are lower compared to the over 1.1 million who visited in the same timeframe last year, with the main sources of international visitors being China, Thailand, Japan, and India.
In 2023, 1.28 million foreign tourists traveled to Myanmar, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
