New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Victor Hugo Echeverri Jaramillo, Colombia's Ambassador to India, remarked on Thursday that the reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump have opened doors for countries like India and Colombia to establish new partnerships.
In a conversation with IANS, Ambassador Jaramillo stated, "We are encountering difficulties due to the tariff strategies implemented during President Trump's administration. Both India and Colombia have felt the impact of elevated tariffs. While this presents a challenge, it equally offers a chance for countries like ours to build new alliances and consider differential tariff setups."
"This trade conflict is not permanent; it will eventually change. For the time being, however, it allows us to seek out new collaborators and enhance cooperation," he added.
Emphasizing the existing trade dynamics between the two nations, the Ambassador noted, "Currently, our bilateral trade is primarily focused on the exchange of oil and thermal coal from Colombia, alongside two-wheelers, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals from India. Nonetheless, there is substantial room for growth. Colombia can boost its exports to India, and India possesses a vast market potential in Colombia."
Jaramillo also pointed out Colombia's advantageous geographical position, mentioning that it is located at the northern tip of South America, providing access to both the Caribbean and Pacific oceans.
"Bogotá's airport ranks first in Latin America for passenger and cargo traffic, establishing it as a major regional hub," he noted.
"Businesses that have set up operations in Colombia recognize that it is one of the most stable economies and political systems in the region. I believe this environment will continue to improve, and while challenges exist now, both our nations can uncover new opportunities, particularly through differential tariff arrangements," he concluded, emphasizing the potential for enhanced trade and investment between India and Colombia.
