Seoul, April 27 (NationPress) The US military is contemplating the long-term deployment of cutting-edge F-35A stealth fighter jets to South Korea, according to a source on Sunday.
If this deployment goes ahead, it would significantly enhance the US air capabilities in South Korea, which currently relies mainly on older F-16 fighter jets. Previously, F-35s were only temporarily stationed for joint exercises.
"The US military is envisioning a permanent stationing of F-35As at Kunsan Air Base," the source stated. "Initially, they plan to station one squadron, with the potential for a rotational deployment of an additional squadron."
A squadron typically consists of about 20 aircraft, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
In July of last year, the US 7th Air Force in South Korea announced the transfer of nine F-16s from Kunsan Air Base to Osan Air Base to form a ‘Super Squadron’ of 31 fighter jets at Osan Air Base.
Last week, the 7th Air Force confirmed plans to transfer most remaining F-16s from Kunsan Air Base to Osan Air Base in October to create another ‘Super Squadron’, which will result in Osan Air Base housing 62 F-16s.
The 7th Air Force noted that Kunsan Air Base will serve as a primary exercise and rotational force bed-down location for US air component forces in South Korea.
When questioned about the potential deployment of F-35As at Kunsan Air Base, a 7th Air Force official indicated that no decisions have been made yet.
The F-35s are recognized for their ability to penetrate deep into adversary territory without being detected. South Korea currently operates 39 F-35As and intends to procure 20 more.
North Korea has frequently voiced its displeasure over the presence of significant US military assets in South Korea, accusing Washington of escalating tensions.
