Tehran, Feb 6 (NationPress) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on the members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to stand together and consistently thwart any attempts by the United States to exert pressure on them.
"The OPEC members should act in a manner that their actions do not adversely affect another member. I firmly believe that if the OPEC members operate in unity and steadfastness, the United States will be unable to impose sanctions or pressure against any of them," Pezeshkian remarked during a meeting with OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais in Tehran.
A statement from his office indicated that during their discussions, Pezeshkian stressed the significant necessity of establishing a common language, stance, and policy among OPEC members, urging efforts to maintain the organization’s integrity free from political influences.
Al Ghais commended Iran for its constructive role within the organization, pointing out that as a founding member, the nation has consistently contributed positively to OPEC, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
He noted that OPEC has always aimed to foster cooperation among its members to safeguard their collective interests, highlighting the immense value of such collaboration.
On Wednesday, Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref stated that engaging in discussions with US President Donald Trump, while not deemed impossible, is not currently on Iran's agenda, according to the official news agency IRNA.
Aref emphasized that Iran's strategies, particularly in the defense sector, are stable and permanent, stating that under a religious decree, the use of nuclear technology for non-peaceful purposes is prohibited.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also mentioned during the cabinet meeting that the maximum pressure campaign reinstated by the United States will ultimately fail again, as reported by IRNA.
"Regarding the comments made by the US President last night, I assert that the 'maximum pressure' has been a failed strategy, and attempting it again will result in another defeat," Araghchi stated.
He added, "If the principal concern is that Iran should not pursue nuclear weapons, this is entirely achievable and not a challenging matter."
Iran remains a committed member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has clear positions on this matter.
Moreover, on Wednesday, the President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, affirmed that Iran has no intentions of developing nuclear weapons and will not pursue such plans in the future, according to IRNA.
Iran's peaceful nuclear program is being carried out in accordance with the regulations of the safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the NPT, Eslami stated.
