Thimphu, Nov 12 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a significant meeting with Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan, in Thimphu on Wednesday to deliberate on various bilateral topics.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the Prime Minister extended his congratulations to the Fourth King in honor of his 70th birthday and shared heartfelt wishes and prayers from India for his continued good health and happiness.
"The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to His Majesty The Fourth King for his exemplary leadership, advice, and support in further enhancing the India-Bhutan friendship. Both leaders engaged in a dialogue regarding bilateral relations and issues of shared concern. They emphasized the common spiritual and cultural ties that unite the people of both nations," stated the MEA.
During his visit, PM Modi participated in the Kalachakra initiation ceremony alongside Bhutan's King and the Fourth King at Changlimithang Stadium, as part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu.
The prayers were conducted under the guidance of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan.
Concluding his two-day visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and reinforcing the Neighbourhood First Policy, PM Modi is set to return to New Delhi.
On the previous day, Prime Minister Modi actively participated in the festivities commemorating the 70th birthday of Bhutan's Fourth King, reaffirming the lasting friendship and spiritual ties between India and Bhutan.
Jigme Singye Wangchuck, born on November 11, 1955, reigned as Bhutan's Fourth Druk Gyalpo from 1972 to 2006, earning recognition as one of Bhutan's most respected and beloved monarchs.
During his reign, Bhutan experienced modernization, enhanced national unity, and embraced a unique happiness-driven philosophy that garnered international acclaim.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck held comprehensive discussions covering a broad spectrum of cooperation, including energy, capacity building, connectivity, technology, defense, and security.
Following their discussions, both leaders inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, marking a significant collaboration between India and Bhutan that highlights their growing energy partnership.
"I had a very productive meeting with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan. We covered the full spectrum of India-Bhutan relations," PM Modi shared in a social media post.
"We discussed cooperation across various sectors like energy, capacity building, connectivity, technology, defense, and security. India takes pride in being a key partner in Bhutan's development journey," he emphasized.
Highlighting the centuries-old cultural and spiritual connections between the two Himalayan neighbors, PM Modi joined the Bhutanese King on Tuesday to seek blessings from the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha at Thimphu's Tashichhodzong.
The relics, housed at the Grand Kuenrey Hall, were sent from India for exposition as a special gesture to celebrate the Fourth King's 70th birthday and the Global Peace Prayer Festival organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan.
