Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Sunday, 30 August to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, receiving a rousing reception from the Indian community gathered to greet him. The visit is part of a two-nation tour that also includes Uzbekistan.
Diaspora Welcome and Cultural Celebrations
Members of the Indian community in Bishkek greeted the Prime Minister with chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram', creating a charged atmosphere at the arrival venue. Yoga enthusiasts also performed demonstrations in his honour, while cultural troupes from Kyrgyzstan put on performances that Modi publicly appreciated.
'From Bharat to Bishkek, a very special welcome by the Indian community earlier this evening,' Modi wrote on social media platform X.
Official Reception at Manas International Airport
Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, received Prime Minister Modi at Manas International Airport in Bishkek. Modi acknowledged the gesture on X, writing: 'Landed in Bishkek a short while ago. Grateful to Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, for the warm welcome. Will be meeting various leaders bilaterally and attending the SCO Summit tomorrow and the day after.'
India's Agenda at the SCO Summit
In his departure statement before leaving for the two-nation tour on Saturday, Modi outlined India's priorities for the summit. 'India has been an active and constructive member of the SCO since 2017. I look forward to advancing India's vision for the region, anchored in Security, Connectivity and Opportunity, and to working with fellow members for a region free from the scourge of terrorism, separatism and extremism,' he said.
Modi also expressed his intention to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, describing it as 'a celebration of the rich living heritage of Central Asia that India holds in deep respect.' Bilateral meetings with President Sadyr Zhaparov of Kyrgyzstan and other SCO leaders are also scheduled.
Kyrgyzstan's Economic Expectations
Kyrgyzstan's Investment Minister Ravshanbek Sabirov said on Saturday that the visit is expected to give a significant boost to bilateral economic ties, investment, and trade. The Central Asian nation is keen to attract Indian companies to sectors including infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, technology, and agro-industry. This comes amid a broader Indian push to deepen strategic and civilisational ties across Central Asia — a region that has gained renewed geopolitical salience.
Strategic Significance of the Visit
India's engagement with the SCO has grown since its full membership in 2017, with New Delhi consistently positioning itself as a voice against terrorism and for regional connectivity. The Bishkek summit offers Modi a platform to reinforce those positions multilaterally while advancing bilateral agendas on the sidelines. How India navigates its relationships within a grouping that also includes China and Pakistan will be closely watched.
