Significant Snowfall Expected Across Japan Until Tuesday

Tokyo, Dec 23 (NationPress) Japan's meteorological agency on Monday cautioned individuals to remain vigilant as significant snowfall is projected to impact mainly the northern to western territories adjacent to the Sea of Japan through Tuesday.

Within a six-hour period leading up to 6 a.m. local time on Monday, snowfall accumulated to approximately 20 cm in Hirakawa City within Aomori Prefecture, Minamiaizu Town in Fukushima Prefecture, and Minakami Town in Gunma Prefecture, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

In the span of 24 hours concluding Tuesday morning, snowfall of up to 60 cm is anticipated in the Hokuriku region, while Hokkaido and the Tohoku and Kanto-Koshin regions may see 50 cm due to a potent winter pressure system, according to the JMA.

Weather officials have urged residents, particularly in the northern to western areas along the Sea of Japan, to remain alert for avalanches and the risk of snow accumulation on power lines and trees, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

On December 19, the first snowfall of the season occurred in central Tokyo, arriving 15 days earlier than the average year and 25 days ahead of the previous season, as stated by the country's meteorological authority.

At 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, the temperature in the capital was recorded at 3.3 degrees Celsius, shortly after snowfall was detected in Minato Ward, Tokyo, according to the JMA.

The initial snowfall of the season was also noted in other areas of the Kanto region, including Yokohama and Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, from Wednesday night until dawn on Thursday, the JMA reported.

Officials have issued warnings regarding heavy snowfall in the mountainous regions located in western and southwestern Japan.

With substantial snow accumulation in various areas, authorities have advised drivers to utilize winter tyres and stay informed about the evolving weather conditions. The onset of winter frequently sees an increase in accidents attributed to unfamiliarity with snowy roads.
