Johannesburg, July 30 (NationPress) South Africa is actively pursuing a resolution with the United States, as the deadline approaches for the 30 percent tariff imposed by Washington on South African goods, set to take effect in just three days, according to a statement from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
In the statement, it was highlighted that "the intersection of geopolitical, domestic, and trade issues" is contributing to the current stalemate between South Africa and the United States, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
"We remain committed to the cause as we await substantive feedback from our US counterparts on the final status of our Framework deal," the South African trade department remarked.
Furthermore, it was noted that "intense" negotiations have been ongoing with the United States. "We have signed a condition precedent document and have prepared our inputs for entry into the template that will follow from the US," the department stated.
Despite the challenges posed by this situation, the department asserted, "We have put our best foot forward, gathering specialists within our ranks who have worked diligently to ensure our country is prepared for various potential scenarios. We have planned accordingly and have not remained idle."
The department also dismissed any plans to "decouple" from the United States, emphasizing that South Africa "chose not to retaliate" against the tariffs announced by Washington.
"We believe that negotiations are the most effective means of addressing the issues at hand. South Africa is not in an isolated position, as the United States seeks to conclude negotiations with approximately 185 countries worldwide by August 1, 2025," the department concluded.
