Seoul, Aug 12 (NationPress) Kim Keon Hee, the former first lady, appeared in court on Tuesday regarding her potential arrest linked to accusations of stock manipulation, election interference, and accepting bribes. This hearing took place at the Seoul Central District Court, just five days after special counsel Min Joong-ki sought a warrant for her arrest due to alleged violations of the Capital Market Act, the Political Funds Act, and laws concerning bribery.
If the court grants the warrant, a decision that may arrive as soon as Tuesday evening, both Kim and her spouse, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, could become the first presidential duo to face imprisonment together, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Yoon is currently incarcerated for an unsuccessful attempt to enforce martial law last December.
Kim is accused of being involved in a stock price manipulation scandal tied to Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea, from 2009 to 2012. She also allegedly interfered in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and the 2024 general elections, and received luxury gifts from the Unification Church through a shaman in return for business favors.
While being questioned by the special counsel team last Wednesday, she expressed her regrets, referring to herself as a “nobody” who has troubled the public.
However, during the interrogation, she is said to have refuted all allegations against her.
The special counsel's investigation encompasses a total of 16 criminal claims against the former first lady, including allegations that the endpoint of an expressway project was altered to benefit her family's land in Yangpyeong, east of Seoul, and that they received preferential treatment in a local apartment construction initiative.
Securing the warrant is anticipated to assist the team in delving deeper into these allegations as well.
