New Delhi, Oct 11 (NationPress) Significant projects like Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port and Jaffna Airport expansion must remain unaffected by political shifts, as their prompt completion is crucial for an equitable distribution of Sri Lanka’s post-crisis recovery across all provinces, as per a recent report.
The latest alterations in logistics responsibilities within Sri Lanka's Cabinet could potentially speed up vital northern infrastructure initiatives. However, these changes might also threaten progress if policy stability is not maintained, as indicated by the Jaffna Post report.
Bimal Rathnayake has been appointed as the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, while Anura Karunathilaka has assumed the role of Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation. This reshuffle aims to accelerate state development goals ahead of the forthcoming national budget, according to the report.
The report highlights the transformative benefits of KKS Port and the Jaffna Airport upgrade for the Northern Province. Feasibility studies, backed by India’s $61 million grant, anticipate monthly cargo volumes ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 tonnes.
Currently, passenger traffic on the Nagapattinam–KKS ferry varies between 1,200 to 2,000 travelers monthly, with expectations of surpassing 5,000 once daily services resume, as per the report.
The Northern Province, especially Jaffna, is among the least economically integrated regions of Sri Lanka. A fully operational KKS Port could connect northern producers in fisheries, agriculture, dairy, and Palmyra-based industries to markets across the Palk Strait and beyond.
An enhanced airport will also act as a vital transit hub between South Asia and the Middle East. Upon becoming operational, it will entice international airlines, boost tourism, and establish new trade routes for perishable exports, particularly seafood, dairy, and fresh produce, ensuring swift access to India.
Moreover, upgrading Jaffna Airport could cut down travel time from Colombo to Jaffna from nearly ten hours by road to around one hour by air.
By completing these projects, the government can create a northern economic corridor that complements Colombo’s prominence and guarantees balanced development, the report concluded.
