Colombo, April 6 (NationPress) In a notable act highlighting the strengthening bilateral ties, Sri Lanka released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the island nation.
This release came after thorough discussions between PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday, wherein the ongoing issue of fishermen's detentions was addressed.
During a joint press briefing, the Prime Minister stated, "We discussed the fishermen's concerns and agreed on the importance of addressing this situation with a humane approach. We emphasized the prompt release of the fishermen and the return of their vessels."
The apprehension of Indian fishermen, mainly from Tamil Nadu, by Sri Lankan authorities over alleged poaching in Sri Lankan waters has been a persistent source of conflict.
Since the start of 2025, Sri Lankan forces have reportedly detained 119 Indian fishermen along with 16 fishing boats, raising alarms within coastal communities and leading to numerous calls for intervention.
Following the talks, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri remarked, "We've been informed that Sri Lankan authorities are set to release 11 fishermen shortly and possibly a few more in the forthcoming days."
"This topic was thoroughly discussed between both parties. As the Prime Minister pointed out, there was a significant emphasis on the need for a humanitarian and constructive approach to these issues, as they ultimately affect the livelihoods of fishermen on both sides," Misri added.
The release of the 14 Indian fishermen aligns with a series of important diplomatic and developmental activities during PM Modi's visit, including the joint inauguration of India-supported railway projects such as the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway line and the newly established signaling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura section.
In a remarkable gesture, Prime Minister Modi was also awarded the esteemed Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan award, one of the highest civilian honors in the island nation.
This distinction acknowledges not just India's unwavering support for Sri Lanka but also PM Modi's dedication to enhancing bilateral relations.
On Saturday, the two leaders also observed the signing and exchange of various Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) spanning sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and development collaboration.
Later that evening, President Dissanayake hosted a State Banquet at the President's House in honor of Prime Minister Modi.
Welcoming the Prime Minister, the Sri Lankan President remarked that this visit would further extend opportunities for cooperation and deepen the friendship between the two nations.
"We are known for our hospitality and extend a warm welcome to all visitors. Particularly, I remember that our friends from across the Palk Strait receive the utmost warmth and affection," President Dissanayake stated.
"We look forward to seeing the citizens of your country visiting this beautiful island where they will encounter warm-hearted communities," he added.
"We eagerly anticipate your return, ready to welcome you back with open arms. We sincerely wish for the good health of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and for the ongoing progress and prosperity of Indian citizens, along with the strengthening of cooperation and friendship between our two nations," the Sri Lankan President concluded.
