Islamabad, Aug 1 (NationPress) Torrential monsoon rains have caused catastrophic flash floods throughout Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB), resulting in at least 10 fatalities and widespread devastation. Local officials have declared a state of emergency in 37 significantly impacted areas, as rescue efforts are underway amidst reports of missing tourists and infrastructural damage estimated at over Rs 20 billion, based on local media reports.
The official notice indicated that twelve sites in the Diamer district, nine in Gilgit, five in Ghizer, four in Skardu, four in Shigar, two in Ghanche, and one each in Nagar and Kharmang have been marked as disaster-stricken regions.
“Due to the intense rainfall during the Monsoon 2025, certain Mouzas in the districts of Gilgit, Ghizer, Nagar, Diamer, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, and Kharmang have been severely impacted by flash floods. The community has faced significant losses, including loss of life, livestock, property damage, and destruction of crops,” stated the notification from the local authorities.
The affected locations in PoGB include Parri Bangla, Jutal, Danyor, Sultanabad, Bagrote, Sharote, Shikyote, Skarkoi, and Hasan Colony KIU Gilgit in Gilgit; Harchi village in Nagar; Biarchi, Thoi, Nazbar, Silpi, and Khanchay in Ghizer; Kondus and Haldi in Ghanche.
Other impacted areas include Babusar, Charat, Jhottee, Niat Valley, Thore Parika, and Shatin Nullah in Diamer; Burgay and Rgiayul in Skardu; Qaimabad, Arincho, and Chutron in Shigar and Torghon Valley in Kharmang.
In light of the damage caused by the severe flooding, an emergency has been enacted in all these regions, local officials confirmed.
“We have sadly lost 10 people, most of whom were tourists visiting the area. Four others suffered injuries and have received medical assistance,” reported local official Faizullah Faraq, as quoted by the Pakistani daily Express Tribune.
In addition, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall accompanied by winds and thunderstorms across various regions of the country on Friday, warning of possible flash floods in susceptible districts.
The PMD's forecast indicates rain in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), northeastern Balochistan, PoGB, and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), while Islamabad has a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms.
