Tragic Attack Claims Lives of 16 Soldiers in South Waziristan, Pakistan

Islamabad, Dec 21 (NationPress) A devastating attack led to the deaths of 16 Pakistani soldiers, with another eight critically injured, following an assault on their security post in the Lita Sar region of the upper district of South Waziristan, located in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, early Saturday.

In a different occurrence, two significant explosions were reported in Balochistan's Kharan on Friday, where the Frontier Corps South discovered around 30 kilograms of explosives at an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) manufacturing site.

These assaults on security personnel coincide with a pivotal resolution made by Pakistan's Apex Committee to de-weaponize the Kurram district of KP, a region that has witnessed deadly sectarian violence resulting in over 150 fatalities.

This district has been grappling with a lack of essential supplies, including food, water, fuel, and medications for more than 70 days, leading to the tragic loss of at least 29 children due to insufficient medical care.

A grand jirga in KP’s Kohat city has been striving to unite all factions and local tribal leaders for a peace agreement for several weeks, while the Apex Committee has decided to confiscate all firearms and ammunition in the Kurram district until February 1, 2025.

All parties involved in the sectarian conflict are required to voluntarily surrender their weapons and ammunition within 15 days and formalize an agreement, with the government serving as a guarantor.

It has also been agreed that all bunkers will be dismantled by February 1, while the Frontier Corps and police will collaborate to ensure the safety of military convoys.

Experts suggest that the decision made by the Apex Committee may not be easily accepted by the local tribes, as the Kurram district is heavily armed, with sectarian factions asserting that these weapons are vital for their tribal security.
