Washington, Nov 22 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump convened with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House, expressing his belief that Mamdani is capable of performing a “good job.”

After the meeting, Trump described it as a “great meeting”, stating, “the better he does, the happier I am.” He also mentioned that his administration would be “helping him to make everybody's dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York.”

Mamdani expressed gratitude to Trump for the “productive meeting,” emphasizing that their discussion was centered not on their differences, but rather on their shared goal of serving New Yorkers.

Trump expressed his belief that Mamdani will “surprise some conservative people,” adding, “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him — a big help…I think this mayor can do some things that are going to be really great.”

Regarding the crackdown on immigration, Trump mentioned that he and Mamdani discussed focusing on murderers, drug dealers, and “some very bad people.”

He stated, “I think we're going to work them out. And I think that if we have known murderers and known drug dealers and some very bad people…we want to get him out, and the mayor wants to have peace.”

Hours prior to their meeting, Trump softened his tone, indicating he believed he and Mamdani “will get along fine.”

In an interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged Mamdani’s “different philosophy,” but noted that both aimed to “make New York strong.”

Trump also responded to Mamdani’s victory speech, which directly addressed the president, encouraging him to “turn the volume up” on the television.

Mamdani had stated, “So, hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

Trump conceded that he may have been “targeting Mamdani a little too hard.”

He remarked, “It was…hard to be totally friendly toward the opponent…he had some interesting opponents, but he ran a good race.”

Prior to the meeting, the White House referred to Mamdani as a “communist”, indicating a contentious relationship between Trump and Mamdani during the New York mayoral campaign.

Trump had warned of economic and social decline if Mamdani won, even endorsing Mamdani’s opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani triumphed over Cuomo by nearly nine percentage points in the November 4 election, marking a historic win as the first Democratic socialist elected mayor of America’s largest city.
