New York, June 28 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will end all trade discussions with Canada in response to Canada's new digital services tax targeting American technology companies.
Trump stated in a social media post, Canada's introduction of a digital services tax is a direct and flagrant attack on the United States.
He further announced, “In light of this outrageous Tax, we are officially terminating ALL Trade discussions with Canada, effective immediately.”
According to Trump, the United States will notify Canada of the tariffs that will be imposed on Canadian businesses within the upcoming week.
Trump pointed out that Canada is mirroring the European Union by implementing this digital services tax.
As the self-imposed deadline of July 9 approaches, the United States is racing to conclude trade negotiations with numerous partners, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioned on Thursday that Trump could potentially extend this deadline.
Earlier, in May 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that he had engaged in extensive and productive talks with Trump at the White House, even though the leaders had differing views on tariff reductions and the concept of Canada becoming the “51st state.”
Carney remarked that it was “not useful” to reiterate the 51st state notion, adding that Trump tends to speak his mind.
He concluded, “He recognizes that we are engaged in negotiations between sovereign nations.”
