Washington, April 3 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump has declared a baseline rate of 10 percent on all imports, with increased specific rates for various countries, including 26 percent for India, 34 percent for China, and 20 percent for the EU.
Additional countries facing elevated tariffs include the UK, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, the EU, Vietnam, Cambodia, Switzerland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
"India is being treated very, very tough," President Trump remarked on Wednesday, referring to the new tariffs displayed on a chart.
"It's very, very tough. The Prime Minister just left. He’s a great friend of mine, but I stated, 'You’re a friend, but you aren't treating us fairly.' They impose a 52 percent tariff on us. It’s important to note, we charge them nearly nothing," Trump explained.
The Indian tariff on imports from the US, as assessed by the US, follows a calculation that encompasses both monetary and non-monetary tariffs and barriers. The newly imposed American tariff on imports from India is pegged at half, or 26 percent.
"Since we are being exceptionally kind, we are kind people, very kind," Trump elaborated on the new tariffs. "We will impose approximately half of what they have been charging us, meaning the tariffs will not be reciprocal. I could have done that, but it would have been challenging for numerous countries unwilling to comply with that."
Trump was alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the White House in February, marking one of his first foreign visits. He has repeatedly praised his friendship with the Prime Minister.
According to Trump, the Chinese tariff on US imports totals 67 percent, leading to a proposed reciprocal tariff of 34 percent. "In other words, they charge us, we charge them, but we charge them less," he stated.
Regarding the EU, he mentioned, "They are very tough, very, very tough traders. You might perceive the European Union as friendly, but they take advantage of us. It’s disheartening to witness. We will impose a 20 percent tariff, essentially half of what they charge us."
Vietnam was described by him as having "excellent negotiators, fantastic people. They like me, and I like them. However, they impose a 90 percent tariff on us, so we will charge them 46 percent."
Trump noted Taiwan, stating, "They took all of our computer chips and semiconductors. Taiwan, where they manufacture, has taken all of our chips. We used to dominate this sector, but now we hold almost none of it, except for the largest company coming in, which will enable us to regain nearly 40 percent."
