Washington, June 3 (NationPress) US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, a pivotal figure in the Trump administration's trade negotiations, has emphasized the importance of trusting President Donald Trump for India's future, assuring that he will protect India's interests.
Lutnick, who serves as the principal US trade negotiator with India and is a close aide to Trump, expressed hope for a forthcoming agreement with India.
He stated, "The President prioritizes America, but he does not do so at the expense of other nations." Speaking at the annual summit of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), he elaborated, "While he focuses on strengthening America, he is also committed to supporting his allies, including India, whom he greatly admires. Together, we can build a remarkable relationship."
However, Lutnick’s tone shifted when discussing the US's expectations for a trade deal: "India has a highly protectionist stance with tariffs. They impose 100 percent tariffs on various goods. When questioned about this, the response seems vague, almost as if there’s no clear rationale. It’s imperative to reassess these tariffs and bring them down to reasonable levels to foster a strong trading partnership."
The US is focused on gaining increased access to the Indian market.
"Our goal is market access. We want our businesses to have equitable access to India’s markets. This won’t encompass everything, but we aim to address the trade deficit. In return, India will seek special access to certain key markets in the US. It’s about finding a balanced solution that benefits both sides." Lutnick explained.
He stressed the importance of having the right negotiators in place on both sides, stating, "If we have the right representatives, we can expedite agreements that typically take years to finalize. I believe we are on the cusp of a significant agreement between the US and India that will be beneficial for both countries."
