Kyiv, June 8 (NationPress) The Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War in Ukraine has refuted claims made by Russia that the Ukrainian government is postponing a prisoner exchange that was agreed upon on Monday. The agency stated, "The assertions made by the Russian side today do not accurately represent the reality or the agreements that were previously established," in a statement released on Saturday.
As per the statement, Ukraine has provided Russia with a list of prisoners earmarked for exchange, which includes individuals who are critically injured or ill. However, the lists submitted by Russia "do not align" with the parameters that were agreed upon for the swap.
The agency emphasized that Ukraine has communicated the necessary feedback to Russia and is now awaiting the next steps from the Russian side.
Earlier on Saturday, Russia accused Ukraine of indefinitely postponing the planned exchange of prisoners and the transfer of deceased soldiers' remains, according to a report by the Xinhua news agency.
Russia stated that Ukraine unexpectedly delayed a transfer involving prisoners of war and the bodies of deceased soldiers, resulting in over 1,200 frozen Ukrainian bodies remaining in refrigerated trucks at the designated exchange point without anyone to retrieve them.
Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky mentioned in a Telegram post that Russia has already submitted the first list of 640 prisoners to Ukraine and has initiated the transfer of deceased Ukrainian soldiers' bodies, but Ukrainian negotiators have not arrived at the exchange location.
He urged Ukraine to "strictly follow the timeline and all agreements reached, and to commence the exchange immediately."
During a second round of direct peace discussions in Istanbul on Monday, Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement to exchange additional prisoners over the weekend.
