New York, Sep 25 (NationPress) The relationship between the US and India remains robust despite recent turbulence, with discussions aimed at addressing trade discrepancies and Russian oil imports proving to be exceptionally fruitful, as stated by a senior official from the State Department.

"We acknowledge our differences, and that has been evident," the official remarked on Wednesday (local time).

"In recent weeks, we've made strides in resolving some of these differences, particularly regarding trade and the acquisition of Russian oil. These discussions have proven to be incredibly productive," the official noted.

The appointment of Sergio Gor, described as one of the President's closest advisors, underscores the significance the President places on this bilateral relationship.

Gor was influential in Trump's election campaign and previously served as the director of the presidential personnel office, responsible for selecting political appointees and vetting them.

Trump also appointed him as his special envoy for South and Central Asia.

The official clarified that Gor's main role will be as ambassador, working within the State Department, while remaining available to Trump for engagement with any of the 13 countries in the region.

"He will be operating from the State Department," the official confirmed, adding, "His primary and official capacity will be as the ambassador to India, concentrating on this vital bilateral relationship."

Having someone so close to the President stationed in New Delhi will facilitate timely engagement at the President's request, which the official believes will significantly benefit the entire region.

The comprehensive briefing on US interests in the area was conducted under the condition that the official remains unnamed for candid discussions on crucial issues.

This year, India is set to host the summit of Quad leaders—an Indo-Pacific-focused coalition that includes Japan and Australia—and the official anticipates Trump's participation, with planning for dates underway.

"I am confident that a Quad Summit is on the horizon," the official expressed. "We are actively planning, and it will occur, if not this year, then next year."

"There are many developments on the horizon for US-India relations, and I expect to see ongoing positive progress," the official stated.

The official linked fluctuations in US policies towards India to Trump's forthrightness, regarding his social media posts as reflections of evolving perspectives rather than definitive statements.

"The President is open about his frustrations with various countries, as evidenced on Truth Social," the official said. "This administration is among the most transparent in history, allowing insight into the President's thoughts."

"We engage honestly with our allies and view India as a valued friend and a key partner for the future," the official emphasized.

The official discussed the tariffs on Russian oil purchases and the reinstatement of sanctions related to Chabahar Port in Iran, framing these actions as part of US pressure on adversaries rather than targeting New Delhi, despite India bearing the consequences.

"The President has returned to a strategy of maximum pressure after decades of concessions to Iran without reciprocation," the official stated. "This includes revoking licenses for all countries, not just India, to access Chabahar Port."

This is intended to prevent any revenue from the port project from reaching the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the official clarified.

The official minimized the perception that India was uniquely targeted by the 25 percent punitive tariff on Russian oil purchases, while noting that China and the EU faced no similar penalties.

"The pressure we apply is consistent with the broader strategy of this administration," the official claimed, despite the absence of punitive tariffs on those nations.

According to the official, both the EU and China are receiving this tough message as well.

He referenced a legislative proposal backed by 85 Senators to impose a 500 percent tariff on anyone purchasing Russian energy, remarking, "Thus, the 25 percent tariff seems relatively mild in comparison."

Trump has suggested an annual fee of $100,000 for H1B visas, predominantly held by Indians who are highly qualified professionals.

The official noted that the department has been in close contact with Indian officials regarding this issue and remarked, "There has not been significant pushback or concern, and we will see how this unfolds."

"Companies and organizations wishing to employ highly skilled workers will continue to do so," the official stated.

A factor contributing to this adjustment is the desire to combat fraud within the visa process.
