Sydney, Sep 9 (NationPress) Australian authorities have apprehended a US national for a serious drug importation crime after allegedly discovering 20 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage at Sydney Airport.
The 31-year-old individual was stopped for a baggage inspection upon her arrival in Sydney from Los Angeles on Sunday, according to a joint statement released on Monday night by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Border Force (ABF).
During the inspection, ABF officers reportedly uncovered 14 black vacuum-sealed bags containing a total of 20 kg of a substance confirmed to be cocaine, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
The AFP took the woman into custody and confiscated the drugs, which have an estimated worth of 6.5 million Australian dollars (approximately $4.2 million).
She faces a charge of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, a crime that could lead to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
“Individuals contemplating smuggling drugs via our airports should seriously consider the repercussions of their decisions. If apprehended, you risk spending significant years of your life incarcerated,” stated AFP Superintendent Morgen Blunden.
“The AFP and ABF continue to identify and detain individuals willing to jeopardize decades of their lives by trafficking illegal drugs through our airports,” Blunden added.
He indicated that the quantity of cocaine seized could have facilitated 100,000 street-level transactions.
