WFP Requests 404 Million USD to Deliver Food Assistance in South Sudan

Juba, Jan 3 (NationPress) The World Food Programme (WFP) has stated that it requires $404 million to address the immediate humanitarian requirements of millions of individuals impacted by crises in South Sudan over the next six months.

In its recent report, the WFP indicated that South Sudan is encountering challenges that continually elevate the vulnerability of millions of families.

The nation remains entangled in a prolonged humanitarian crisis characterized by persistent food and nutrition insecurity. The report mentioned that the ongoing conflict in Sudan has exacerbated the circumstances, leading to the influx of 892,000 individuals into South Sudan by November 30, 2024.

"The scenario could deteriorate, with predictions indicating that 7.7 million people will confront acute food insecurity during the 2025 lean season," the WFP cautioned.

Among the 7.7 million, 2.5 million individuals are anticipated to experience emergency levels of food insecurity, with 63,000 facing catastrophic conditions, as stated in the report.

The WFP further highlighted that 2.1 million children aged six to 59 months and 1.1 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are likely to endure acute malnutrition.

In December 2024, the WFP urged donors for early funding for operations in 2025 to facilitate the prepositioning of food supplies and to avert escalating operational costs and hunger throughout 2025.

The organization reported that it provided over 13,000 metric tonnes of food and $4.6 million in cash-based transfers to 1.6 million people in November 2024, achieving 92 percent of its monthly target.

Since January 2024, the WFP has aided 4.2 million individuals.

On December 11, 2024, the WFP introduced the South Sudan Resilience Strategy to assist marginalized communities grappling with food insecurity, conflict, and climate shocks, as reported by Xinhua.

This strategy integrates resilience-building initiatives within food distribution efforts, gradually transitioning towards comprehensive livelihood support, disaster risk reduction, nutrition assistance, and school feeding programs.
