Geneva, April 3 (NationPress) The World Health Organization (WHO) is grappling with a budgetary shortfall of $1.9 billion for the years 2026 and 2027, in addition to a $600 million deficit through 2025, as reported by various media outlets.
This $1.9 billion funding deficit represents nearly 45 percent of its already reduced budget for the two-year span leading to 2027, according to Health Policy Watch, an independent global health news organization, which shared the details on Wednesday.
The report, which cites WHO officials from a meeting held on Tuesday, notes that the United States owes the WHO $260 million in dues for 2024 and 2025.
During this meeting, Raul Thomas, WHO's assistant director-general of business operations, disclosed that the prior administration of US President Joe Biden failed to pay the $130 million dues for 2024 before leaving office, as reported by the Xinhua news agency, referencing the Health Policy Watch report.
Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed WHO staff via Zoom, predicting potential staff reductions, stating, "Starting with senior leadership, but will reflect all levels and regions," as quoted.
He further emphasized, "Everything is on the table, including merging divisions, departments and units, and relocating functions," Tedros added.
In response to the US's decision to exit the WHO, the organization has cut its 2026-2027 budget from $5.3 billion to $4.2 billion.
Data from WHO indicates that the US's contribution to the organization’s regular budget for the 2024-2025 period was assessed at 22 percent, which is the highest among all member states.
On January 20, US President Donald Trump enacted an executive order to withdraw the nation from the WHO, an action that will take effect after a one-year notice period.
