Washington, March 31 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump informed reporters aboard Air Force One that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to be reconsidering a pivotal minerals agreement with the US.
On Sunday, Trump stated that he believes Zelensky is reluctant to finalize the deal and cautioned that such a decision would lead to significant repercussions.
"He's attempting to withdraw from the rare earth agreement, and if he proceeds with that, he will face substantial issues, serious issues," Trump remarked, according to a news outlet report.
"Zelensky aspires to join NATO, but that will never happen. He recognizes that reality."
Ukrainian authorities are currently assessing the latest iteration of the minerals agreement, which is said to give the US extensive control over Ukraine's natural resources through a joint investment fund.
Zelensky communicated on March 28 that he would not endorse a minerals agreement that jeopardizes Ukraine's ambitions to join the European Union.
"Any proposal that could endanger Ukraine's EU membership is unacceptable," he emphasized.
Bloomberg reported on March 29 that Kyiv is seeking modifications to the existing proposal, including increased investment from the US and clearer operational guidelines for the joint fund.
The Trump administration has promoted the minerals agreement as a vital component of Ukraine's journey towards peace, yet has not provided concrete security assurances in return for broad resource access.
Kyiv and Washington were poised to sign an earlier draft of the agreement on February 28, but the arrangement collapsed after a tense Oval Office confrontation involving Zelensky, Trump, and Vice-President J.D. Vance.
The White House has characterized the minerals agreement as a means for the US to "recover" some of the financial assistance rendered to Ukraine since the onset of Russia's extensive invasion.
Trump has also expressed interest in discussing a natural resources arrangement with Russia.
After a March 18 conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump mentioned that the US aimed to enhance trade with Moscow and access "very significant rare earth resources".
Putin had previously stated on February 24 that Russia is amenable to collaborating with international partners on developing rare earth metals, even in regions of Ukraine that are under occupation.
