Agartala, May 9 (NationPress) The Tripura Frontier of the Border Security Force (BSF), in collaboration with state police, on Friday detained 11 additional Bangladeshi nationals, comprising four women and four children, as per reports from officials.
A police spokesperson indicated that these 11 Bangladeshi individuals, which included four women and four children, arrived at Sabroom in southern Tripura from Gujarat by train. They were staying at the residence of an Indian national in the border village of Srinagar before attempting to return to their home country. Local residents apprehended them before they could cross into Bangladesh and subsequently handed them over to the BSF and Tripura Police.
The BSF and police representatives are currently conducting interrogations of the detained Bangladeshi nationals. According to the official, they will be presented in a Tripura court on Saturday as part of the legal process. The adults among the detainees are aged between 21 and 40 years, while the children range from two to twelve years old. These individuals hail from Kalia Upazila in Narail District located in the Khulna Division of Bangladesh.
A spokesperson for the BSF remarked that border security forces have heightened their vigilance and intensified their presence along the International Border since the outbreak of violence in Bangladesh last June-July, particularly following the collapse of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
“We have further bolstered our security measures after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan,” the spokesperson noted, adding that senior BSF officials routinely visit border areas to monitor the situation continuously.
Since August of last year, the BSF, Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Tripura Police have collectively or independently apprehended approximately 900 Bangladeshi nationals. Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas frequently face detention at railway stations and border villages as they attempt to navigate deeper into India after illegally crossing the India-Bangladesh border, allegedly in search of employment and other opportunities.
Tripura shares an 856 km border with Bangladesh and is encircled on three sides by the neighbouring nation. Most sections of the India-Bangladesh border with Tripura are already fenced, except for certain stretches.
