Bhopal, July 19 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla has reported that approximately 20 percent of first-year students at the Medical Science University (MSU) in Jabalpur have chosen to write their semester exams in Hindi.

"This group is set to complete their four-year medical program in Hindi by 2027-28. MSU has also announced that from the next semester, students will receive separate question papers in both Hindi and English," the Deputy Chief Minister stated.

Shukla, who oversees the Health and Medical Education Department in Madhya Pradesh, mentioned to IANS that he has instructed all government medical colleges to promote the use of Hindi for writing exams in medical courses.

"All government medical institutions have been instructed to fully facilitate both theoretical and practical classes for Hindi medium students, ensuring they have no obstacles during their education. Initial challenges may arise as this initiative begins, but our commitment is to provide every possible support to the students," he added.

This announcement comes amid reports indicating that despite the introduction of MBBS studies in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh three years ago, student participation in writing exams in the language has been minimal.

Additionally, the state government has recently declared that students who choose to pursue their MBBS in Hindi will receive incentives such as a 50 percent reduction in examination fees.

MSU will also host a workshop on July 22 where students and faculty from medical colleges will be encouraged to voice their concerns regarding the MBBS program in Hindi, with the aim of addressing these issues.

Importantly, Madhya Pradesh is the first state in India to offer the MBBS course in Hindi under the National Education Policy (NEP) that was implemented in 2022.

The Hindi medium course was first launched at Gandhi Medical College (GMC) in Bhopal.

A war room named 'Mandhar' was established in 2022, employing around 100 doctors from various specialties to assist with the translation of textbooks from English to Hindi.

Moreover, the MBBS course materials are being translated and made accessible to students interested in pursuing their studies in Hindi.

A faculty member from Gandhi Medical College noted that MBBS students are instructed in a blend of 'Hinglish' (Hindi and English), with many English terms appearing in Hindi script in the translated materials.

Point of View

The move to allow Hindi as a medium of instruction in medical courses reflects a significant step towards inclusivity in education. It acknowledges the linguistic diversity in India and aims to enhance accessibility for students who may struggle with traditional English mediums. This initiative could bridge the gap for many aspiring medical professionals, fostering a more equitable educational environment.
