Chennai, Dec 9 (NationPress) As the Assembly elections approach, the Tamil Nadu government has accelerated its administrative efforts, focusing on the swift implementation of key welfare initiatives and addressing long-overdue vacancies across various departments. This renewed initiative includes the revival of the free laptop distribution program for students and the enhancement of the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai support for women, along with a speedy recruitment process at the local level.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is expected to officially inaugurate the new phase of free laptop distribution targeted at college students, as confirmed by officials.
In the initial phase, approximately 10 lakh students from arts and science colleges, engineering schools, agricultural universities, and medical colleges will be provided laptops.
The second phase aims to include another 10 lakh students. This initiative, announced in the 2025–26 State Budget, has a significant allocation of Rs 2,000 crore.
As per sources from the Higher Education Department, procurement is largely accomplished, with final quality assessments currently in progress.
An expert panel, composed of faculty from Anna University and IIT Madras alongside officials from the National Informatics Centre, is supervising the implementation.
Heads of government colleges have been instructed to promptly identify eligible recipients and report details without delay.
Additionally, Chief Minister Stalin is set to launch the expanded Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai program on December 12.
By easing certain eligibility requirements, the government aims to enroll more women in this scheme. Of the 28 lakh new applications received, 15 lakh women will join as beneficiaries, raising total coverage to around 1.30 crore women statewide.
The implementation speed of this scheme had previously faced criticism from opposition parties. In tandem with welfare measures, the government is also hastening the filling of vacant positions. Aside from appointments through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, district administrations are being directed to recruit for lower-level roles such as watchmen and office assistants through direct methods.
Officials in the Revenue Administration Department report that about 1,500 village administrative officer positions will be filled by the month's end, with call letters already available on the government portal.
Additional district-level appointments are anticipated to wrap up within the next 20 days, indicating a broad administrative push ahead of the election regulations taking effect.
