Chennai, Nov 12 (NationPress) Commissioner A. Arun of the Greater Chennai Police has disclosed that the city has witnessed a staggering 342 bomb threats reported since April this year, largely directed at significant establishments and high-profile individuals.
In a recent announcement, the senior officer indicated that the investigation into these alarming threats has been officially transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Tamil Nadu Police.
The commissioner emphasized that every threat is treated with utmost seriousness. “No threat is taken lightly. A case is either registered under an FIR or documented in the Community Service Register (CSR), based on the complaint's specifics,” he mentioned.
Senior police officials have noted that the threats—mostly received via email—share striking similarities in their language and structure, raising suspicions that a lone individual or a small group may be orchestrating them.
“Many of these fraudulent messages utilize TOR browsers or VPNs to obscure the sender’s IP address. For practical purposes, however, these messages might have originated within the city,” a senior officer remarked.
Furthermore, police sources revealed that the Chennai City Police are collaborating with central agencies, as similar threats have emerged from various major cities across India. In certain instances, the threats have been traced back to individuals with mental health issues or minors, who were released on station bail following strict warnings. Nonetheless, authorities have taken decisive action in serious cases.
Recently, a physically challenged individual was apprehended for sending a hoax bomb threat to the Chief Minister’s residence. Investigations confirmed that he was a repeat offender with a history of similar acts.
In light of a series of hoax threats directed at foreign consulates in Chennai, Commissioner Arun convened meetings with consular representatives to update them on the security measures implemented and to assure them of the city’s preparedness.
Meanwhile, following the recent explosion in Delhi, the Chennai City Police have escalated vehicle inspections at crucial junctions since Monday night. “There is no specific threat to Chennai, but we are exercising heightened vigilance without inciting unnecessary panic,” Commissioner Arun stated.
