Guwahati, June 16 (NationPress) Following the recent communal unrest in Dhubri town, triggered by the discovery of suspected cattle heads near the Hanuman temple, the Assam Police have apprehended 50 individuals so far, according to officials.
The Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Akhilesh Kumar Singh, provided updates on the arrests during a press conference on Sunday.
IGP Singh reassured that the situation in Dhubri has now normalized.
"The situation is completely under control. We have deployed ongoing patrol units throughout Dhubri to maintain peace and prevent any further unrest," he stated.
Regarding recent inflammatory wall graffiti in the area, IGP Singh confirmed that one individual has been detained and is currently under investigation.
He mentioned that the inquiry is still in its initial phases.
"One of the previous graffiti messages included the term 'Nutan Bangla' (New Bengal)," IGP Singh noted.
However, he warned against reaching hasty conclusions.
"It's premature to determine if the same individual is responsible for both the recent and earlier writings," the police official added.
Forensic teams are actively analyzing evidence pertaining to the graffiti, with police anticipating more clarity in the upcoming days.
Authorities have urged the public to stay calm and refrain from spreading rumors while the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government will persist in its crackdown on anti-social elements that have deep roots since post-Independence.
The Chief Minister asserted, "We have already taken action. Assam is a very sensitive state. Anti-national activities will not cease with just my warnings, as they have been happening since Independence. Therefore, our campaign against them will continue."
Additionally, CM Sarma mentioned that the Lakhipur Police in the Goalpara district arrested five individuals for allegedly throwing beef near a temple, in a calculated effort to provoke communal unrest following Eid-ul-Zuha.
The arrested individuals include Bodir Ali, Hazarat Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia, and Jahangir Alom, all residents of the Khakilamari area under the Lakhipur police station.
"A case has been filed, and stringent measures are being implemented to ensure that all such individuals are held accountable under the law," the Chief Minister stated.
Tensions in Dhubri escalated on June 8 and 9 after suspected cattle remains were discovered in a temple, igniting unrest.
The police have registered five FIRs relating to three separate incidents, which include allegations of cow slaughter, rioting, and the dissemination of misinformation.
Initially, twenty-two individuals were apprehended following the communal unrest.
