Chennai, Jan 25 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu government has requested the community to refrain from disseminating false information about the Vengaivayal incident, which has been a controversial topic since December 2022.
In an official statement, the state government clarified that the crime was executed by three individuals motivated by personal animosity, contrary to prior assumptions.
The Vengaivayal case shocked Tamil Nadu when human waste was discovered in an overhead water tank that supplies water to Scheduled Caste residents of the village in Pudukkottai district.
On December 26, 2022, local youths reported seeing feces floating in the water.
A case was filed at the Vellanur Police Station and subsequently transferred to the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) in January 2023 for an in-depth investigation.
According to the government's statement, the CB-CID undertook a thorough investigation.
Over 100 witnesses, including the complainant and villagers from Vengaivayal and Eraiyur, were interrogated.
Mobile communication records of several individuals were analyzed, and biological samples were collected for comprehensive DNA testing.
The inquiry concluded that the crime was plotted by Muraliraja, who sought revenge after being humiliated at a Gram Sabha meeting in October 2022. Two others, Sudarshan and Muthaiah, were implicated through mobile records, photographs, and video evidence.
The charge sheet submitted by the CB-CID on January 20 contains forensic reports, medical evaluations, expert testimonies, and witness statements as evidence against the accused.
The government has appealed to the public to avoid spreading misinformation and stressed that the findings are grounded in detailed evidence and procedural integrity. However, the CB-CID's conclusions have led to public outcry.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a leading Dalit political party allied with the ruling DMK, has vocally opposed the report, calling it unjust and alarming. VCK leaders expressed disbelief that members of the Dalit community would taint their own water supply.
"It is both cruel and nonsensical to accuse the victims of this heinous act," stated Manikantan, a local VCK leader.
He further remarked that the community has faced immense suffering over the past two years while seeking justice.
The VCK intends to organize a protest in Pudukkottai, demanding that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Similarly, the CPI-M has announced plans for a protest march, supporting calls for a CBI investigation.
CPI-M state secretary P. Shanmugam condemned the CB-CID's findings, asserting, "It is unacceptable to suggest that the villagers were responsible for this act due to personal grudges."
The incident has left the residents of Vengaivayal feeling anguished and disheartened.
Villagers have accused authorities of failing to identify the actual perpetrators despite over a year of investigation.
While the CB-CID performed DNA and voice analysis, they reported a lack of direct evidence in the case.
