Mumbai, March 5 (NationPress) Following the suspension of Abu Azmi from the Maharashtra Assembly during the current Budget Session due to his contentious remarks about Aurangzeb, the embroiled Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator released a video statement to clarify the escalating controversy. He previously informed the media that his comments regarding Aurangzeb were more of a reaction to the Assam CM comparing Rahul Gandhi to the Mughal ruler.

The troubled SP leader remarked on his suspension despite having retracted his controversial statement. “I’ve just learned that I’ve been suspended from the Assembly for the remainder of this session. When I spoke about a historical figure, I did not disrespect any leader or insult anyone. My comments on Aurangzeb were rooted in history,” Azmi expressed in a video message.

Notably, the SP leader made this video clarification against the backdrop of a portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji, whom he has been accused of insulting by rival factions.

Azmi reaffirmed his dedication to the Assembly's operations, stating, “I wanted the Assembly to function smoothly. To ensure that, I was ready to retract my words. Even after being suspended, I took back my comments for the sake of the session’s progress.”

He added, “There are individuals like Prashant Koratkar and Rahul Solapurkar who have made derogatory statements about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but they faced no repercussions. They weren't even jailed, while those who have criticized Shivaji Maharaj aren’t banned. This feels like a double standard.”

Azmi conveyed his discontent regarding the disruption of the Assembly session, noting, “I had important issues to raise concerning my constituency during this session, but this suspension is an injustice. I am unwell, but I will pursue legal action,” he stated.

His commendations for Aurangzeb ignited considerable controversy, leading to calls for his suspension. He later clarified on X that his statements had been misconstrued and were based on historical facts.

He underscored that he had no intention of disrespecting Shivaji Maharaj or other national icons and expressed regret if his remarks caused any offense. Azmi accused political forces of leveraging the issue to disrupt the budget session, which he claimed adversely affected the people of Maharashtra.
