Chennai, Oct 8 (NationPress) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay has officially requested police authorization to visit Karur to meet the families of the victims who perished in the unfortunate stampede during his inaugural significant political roadshow on September 27. On that day, a vast crowd, estimated at around 30,000, congregated at Veluchamipuram in Karur to witness Vijay's rally.
The venue, which was equipped for a much smaller audience, descended into chaos after prolonged delays and an unforeseen influx when Vijay ascended his campaign vehicle to greet supporters.
This tragic stampede resulted in 41 fatalities and over 60 injuries, inciting sorrow throughout Tamil Nadu and igniting outrage across the nation.
Following the incident, numerous political figures, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, visited Karur to comfort grieving families.
The Tamil Nadu government has declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh for each deceased family, while TVK has pledged Rs 20 lakh to each family affected.
Despite these gestures, criticism has mounted regarding Vijay's absence from the site, with the Madras High Court also questioning his lack of presence.
In light of this, Vijay recently shared a video message conveying his profound sorrow and vowing to personally visit Karur to extend his condolences.
According to TVK's publicity general secretary Arunraj, Vijay has already communicated with the families of 33 victims through personal video calls.
"We have emailed the Director General of Police (DGP) requesting permission for Vijay to travel to Karur and meet the bereaved families. Today, our representatives also visited the DGP's office in Chennai to submit a formal request," Arunraj stated during a press briefing.
The request emphasizes the necessity for adequate security arrangements during Vijay's visit, considering the sensitive environment and anticipated large crowds.
This action comes amid increasing public pressure for Vijay to uphold his commitment and stand with the mourning families in person.
While officials have yet to announce when the permission will be granted, TVK leaders have indicated that the visit will occur promptly once police clearance and security logistics are finalized.
