Air Marshal Mishra appointed Ram Mandir Trust CEO: BJP hails Op Sindoor record
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust on 3 September, drawing swift praise from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a cautious welcome from some opposition quarters, even as concerns over alleged financial irregularities at the temple complex continued to simmer.
BJP Welcomes the Appointment
BJP spokesperson R.P. Singh congratulated Mishra and linked his new role directly to his military record. 'Jeetendra Mishra led Operation Sindoor and secured victory for India. We expect that he will handle this new responsibility in the same manner and also bring transparency here,' Singh said.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam highlighted the religious and historical weight of the post, noting that over 6,000 applications were received for the CEO position. He said the selection sought 'an individual who embodies a blend of faith in Hinduism and patriotism.' BJP MP Santosh Pandey added that Mishra had dedicated 43 years of his life to national service, describing the appointment as a matter of pride.
BJP National Spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan underscored the trust's autonomy, noting it is 'an autonomous and independent institution' with its own appointment rules. BJP West Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya said Mishra would oversee the ongoing grand construction of the temple and ensure it is carried out properly. Chhattisgarh Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal called the appointment 'a matter of great coincidence and good fortune,' crediting Mishra's stature 'not only nationally but also in the global arena.'
Uttar Pradesh and Allied Leaders Back the Move
Uttar Pradesh Minister Narendra Kashyap said appointing someone who played a major role in Operation Sindoor was 'a better decision,' describing Mishra as 'a patriot, a nationalist, and someone who works for the country.' Janata Dal (United) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak also welcomed the move, framing it as a corrective step: 'When there are irregularities, people are removed, and new individuals are brought in for the better.' He called for close monitoring of the trust's functioning going forward.
Notably, former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh offered a more measured assessment. While acknowledging Mishra's performance during Operation Sindoor, he cautioned that 'the situation here is different. There are hidden enemies here, so some caution will have to be exercised.'
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Irregularities
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ramashankar Rajbhar welcomed Mishra personally — noting that the retired Air Marshal hails from Bhopatpura village in the Bhatpar Rani Assembly constituency within his own parliamentary constituency — but flagged the difficult environment the new CEO would be stepping into. Rajbhar alleged that officers in Uttar Pradesh face government pressure and that some have even resigned because of it. He also raised concerns over alleged theft of offerings at the temple, reportedly suppressed for months, and said both the state government and a national-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been constituted to probe the matter.
'May he serve Lord Ram and protect Ram's funds so that no one can loot them. He can meet this challenge only by refusing to bow to pressure from those in power,' Rajbhar said.
Congress MLA Nana Patole was more critical, alleging that saints had expressed reservations about how the temple's affairs were being managed. 'Some saints are not even willing to accept it as the Ram Temple; saints have started saying that this has become a site of looting for the BJP and RSS,' Patole alleged. He accused the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of exploiting public faith in the Ram Temple, charges the ruling party has not directly addressed.
Background: Why This Appointment Matters
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was constituted by the Centre following the Supreme Court's landmark 2019 verdict on the Ayodhya title dispute. The trust oversees construction and administration of the Ram Temple — a project that carries enormous religious significance for millions of Hindu devotees and immense political symbolism for the BJP. This comes amid a backdrop of reported concerns over financial management at the site, making the choice of a CEO with a credibility-heavy military profile a deliberate signal from the trust's leadership.
All eyes will now be on how Mishra structures the trust's administrative apparatus and whether he is able to address the transparency concerns that opposition voices — and reportedly some saints — have raised.
