Pune, Aug 30 (NationPress) Deputy Chief Minister and NCP President Ajit Pawar stated on Saturday that the Mahayuti government is optimistic regarding the demand for Maratha reservation put forth by activist Manoj Jarange-Patil. The government is actively seeking a resolution to this matter.
“A Cabinet subcommittee, led by state Cabinet Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, has been established to deliberate on the issue. Every individual has the right to protest and demonstrate, but it is crucial that these actions remain peaceful. The Mahayuti government is committed to finding a resolution, and we are confident that a solution will be reached,” remarked Dy CM Ajit Pawar.
He clarified that the court has permitted Jarange-Patil to conduct a one-day protest. “Jarange-Patil believes that if the court issues instructions, everyone should comply. He has been granted a one-day extension (until Saturday), but he remains determined to continue his indefinite fast. Consequently, there is ongoing tension between the government and the protesters,” he noted.
Ajit Pawar emphasized, “Our stance is positive. We are actively discussing this matter, and we are dedicated to finding a resolution regarding reservation. Justice must be ensured for every community.”
This statement was made on a day when the Mumbai Police extended permission for Jarange-Patil to protest until Saturday; however, he is resolute in his indefinite fast until the government enacts the Maratha reservation that complies with legal standards.
Pawar's remarks follow a day after Jarange-Patil expressed admiration for him and Dy CM Eknath Shinde.
Previously, Jarange-Patil accused the MahaYuti government of instigating a conflict between Marathas and OBCs.
After receiving a one-day extension from the police for his protest, Jarange-Patil told reporters, “We never intended to take away the OBCs' quota and allocate it to the Marathas. Records dating back 150 years exist in the Hyderabad Gazette and Satara Gazette. We are not infringing on anyone's rights; rather, we have relinquished our own and ceded them to others. This struggle is all-encompassing; I will not yield. The government must either provide reservation, or I will perish on my hunger strike. I will not withdraw my agitation until the reservation is implemented.”
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, “How can there be conflict between OBCs and Marathas? This is the narrative being pushed. I have heard the remarks of certain individuals since morning, and we are monitoring these attempts. Do not create turmoil over this movement; it will backfire.”
He clarified that the Maratha community cannot receive reservation from the OBC quota.
He also directed criticism at the Opposition, stating, “Do not adopt a stance of convenience. Take a firm position. Legal processes will proceed, but the Opposition is not taking a strong stance as they seek political advantage by inciting discord within society. Our aim is to maintain harmony among all communities.”
He added, “The government is working to ensure that the two communities do not come into conflict under any circumstances. During the last decade of alliance, justice has been served to the Maratha community. Education and employment initiatives have been introduced during our tenure. We remain optimistic regarding Maratha reservation.”
Dy CM Eknath Shinde asserted that reservations for the Maratha community cannot be granted by diminishing the quota of OBCs or other communities, emphasizing that the government’s role is to provide support as per the legal framework.
The government is also extending the facilities that the OBC community benefits from to the Maratha community. The government continues to remain positive about whatever is legally appropriate, he remarked, in reference to Jarange-Patil's indefinite fast supported by numerous followers at Azad Maidan.
