Lucknow, Feb 28 (NationPress) In a significant relief for former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has approved the Uttar Pradesh government's request to withdraw the criminal case against him.

Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan delivered the ruling on Thursday.

Singh approached the High Court to contest the earlier decision made by the Gonda court that rejected the state's request to withdraw the case against him.

Previously, the Gonda court had dismissed the plea from the state government to withdraw the case involving Singh.

In 2014, Singh faced charges for disobeying an order issued by a public servant.

He was accused of breaching Section 144 of the CrPC by organizing a public meeting.

It is noteworthy that on March 3, a Delhi court will continue recording the testimony of one of the female wrestlers who has accused Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), of sexual harassment.

In January, the Delhi Police opposed Singh's attempt in the Delhi High Court to dismiss the proceedings related to the sexual harassment case.

While arguing against the dismissal of the case, the Delhi Police informed the court that the trial involving the BJP leader is currently underway.

Singh sought to quash the first information report (FIR) and related proceedings, asserting that they were “false” and “frivolous”.

Numerous female wrestlers, spearheaded by Olympians Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, have protested for several months since January 2023 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, alleging that Singh sexually harassed and intimidated them.

The wrestlers also called for a complete overhaul of the WFI, highlighting the necessity for a safer and more supportive atmosphere for athletes.

Following wrestler Vinesh Phogat's decision to join the Congress party in 2024 to contest the Haryana Assembly elections, Singh remarked, “Back in January, when the protest began, I told the media that this was all a conspiracy against me, and now it is evident. The Congress has scripted the protest, and it has been exposed at their party office.”

Denying the accusations of sexual assault against him, the former BJP MP contended that the truth would ultimately be revealed in court.
