Andhra Pradesh Calls on Tamil Nadu to Curb Illegal Fishing Activities
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 22 (NationPress) The government of Andhra Pradesh has raised alarms regarding the illegal intrusion and fishing activities conducted by mechanised fishing vessels from Tamil Nadu within its territorial waters. The state has formally addressed this situation with the Tamil Nadu authorities.
Rama Shankar Naik, the Commissioner of Fisheries for Andhra Pradesh, has dispatched a letter to the Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare in Tamil Nadu, urging for immediate action and strict measures to halt the ongoing entry of Tamil Nadu fishing boats into Andhra's waters.
Naik highlighted that the unauthorised presence of Tamil Nadu's mechanised fishing boats in Andhra Pradesh's territorial waters is a continuing issue, threatening the livelihood of local fishermen and destabilising the existing regulatory measures.
Moreover, the Commissioner pointed out that the illegal fishing operations by Tamil Nadu boats have raised significant law and order concerns.
He recalled that similar communications were sent by Andhra Pradesh officials in the years 2022, 2023, and 2025, calling for a coordination meeting to address the ongoing trespassing and unlawful fishing activities carried out by Tamil Nadu's mechanised vessels.
Naik also referred to a troubling incident at the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour located in SPSR Nellore district on March 18. In this occurrence, fishermen from Puducherry seized four fishing boats that had been lawfully detained by the police, a move that constitutes a serious violation of law and undermines enforcement authority.
“This incident has sparked significant unrest among fishermen from 162 coastal villages spanning Tirupati, SPSR Nellore, Prakasam, and Bapatla districts, and has the potential to escalate inter-state tensions if not resolved promptly,” the letter stated.
The authorities in Tamil Nadu have also been alerted to the ongoing destructive fishing practices, particularly trawling by their vessels within Andhra Pradesh's territorial waters, which are causing serious ecological harm. These activities have reportedly resulted in an uptick in the deaths of turtles and other endangered marine species, with carcasses frequently washing ashore along the coast of Andhra Pradesh, as noted by Rama Shankar Naik.
