Kolkata, June 26 (NationPress) In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended a key suspect in the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, who was killed during the post-election violence in 2021, after a lengthy four-year manhunt.
The individual arrested has been identified as Arun Dey, for whom the CBI had previously issued a reward of Rs 50,000. Dey was one of five primary suspects involved in the murder of Sarkar, a resident of the Kankurgachi locality in North Kolkata, amidst the unrest that erupted following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to sources, Dey was captured on Thursday at a concealed location in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. However, additional details regarding the arrest are still pending.
The remaining four primary suspects in the case—Sukhdeo Podder (alias Sukha), Gopal Das (alias Vishal), Amit, and Biswajit Das (alias Bomba)—remain at large.
All five individuals are recognized as influential figures associated with the Trinamool Congress in the region and have close ties with the ruling party's legislator from the Belegahta Assembly constituency in North Kolkata, Paresh Paul, along with Swapan Samaddar, a Trinamool Congress councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The CBI has already interrogated Paul regarding his involvement. Nevertheless, his name was excluded from the charge sheet, which has caused frustration among the family of the deceased BJP worker.
To recap, Abhijit Sarkar was tragically murdered on May 2, 2021, immediately after the announcement of the 2021 Assembly election results, in which the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory.
The CBI assumed responsibility for the investigation from the Kolkata Police following an order from the Calcutta High Court. In September 2021, a trial court in Kolkata labeled the five suspects as absconders.
Subsequently, the CBI placed a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to their capture. After more than four years, one of the five absconders has been apprehended. He is expected to be presented before a special court in Kolkata later today, where the CBI is likely to seek his custody for further questioning, according to sources.
