Guwahati, July 24 (NationPress) In preparation for the upcoming Independence Day festivities, Assam Police have intensified security measures throughout the state as a precaution, officials reported on Thursday.
A high-ranking police official stated, "We have increased monitoring on national highways to prevent any undesirable incidents."
Earlier this month, the ULFA-I organization asserted that its Eastern headquarters in Myanmar was targeted by the Indian Army with drone strikes during the early hours, a claim the Army has refuted.
The banned group claimed in a press release that in these cross-border operations, 19 of their members were killed and another 19 were injured.
Last year, ULFA-I attempted to detonate explosives at 12 different locations in Guwahati during the Independence Day celebrations. However, due to technical malfunctions, the explosions did not occur, and security forces later recovered the explosives.
Recently, the NIA apprehended two suspects in connection with an IED planted by the ULFA-I terror group at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati, as part of a conspiracy to execute multiple explosions in Assam for the 2024 Independence Day.
Bhargob Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi, both from Dibrugarh district, were implicated in the conspiracy orchestrated by the outlawed organization, aimed at instilling fear and jeopardizing the sovereignty, security, and integrity of the nation, according to the NIA.
With their arrest, the total number of suspects apprehended in the conspiracy has reached three.
The NIA, which took over the case from Dispur police in September of the previous year, filed charges last month against three suspects under various sections of the BNS, UA(P) Act, and the Explosives Substance Act.
The three individuals charged include Paresh Baruah, also known as Paresh Asom, and other aliases, who serves as the chairman and SS Commander-in-Chief of ULFA-I.
The other two named in the charge sheet are Abhijit Gogoi, known by multiple aliases, and Jahnu Boruah, also known by other names.
