Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) A court has approved anticipatory bail for Taslima Bibi, spouse of the detained Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, on a bond of Rs 5,000 related to the murder case.
The Barasat court in North 24 Parganas district granted Taslima anticipatory bail on Saturday, in connection with the murder of Bholanath Ghosh's son and driver, a crucial witness against Sheikh Shahjahan.
In his complaint filed at Nazat police station, Bholanath identified Taslima Bibi and Sheikh Shahjahan as the primary suspects.
During the proceedings, the district judge pointed out that the police had failed to demonstrate any involvement of Taslima in the incident. Hence, the court provided relief to Shahjahan's spouse.
Consequently, her anticipatory bail application was approved. However, the judge mandated her cooperation with the police investigation and participation in the judicial process.
On the morning of December 10, last year, Bholanath Ghosh, a significant witness in the ration 'scam' and sexual offense case against Shahjahan, was reportedly targeted by a speeding truck on the Basanti Highway near Kolkata's Science City. While Ghosh survived the incident, his son and driver tragically lost their lives.
Following this, Bholanath approached the Nazat police station and lodged a formal complaint against Sheikh Shahjahan, Taslima, and eight others.
An FIR was filed under murder and attempted murder charges. The complaint further alleged that Sheikh Shahjahan informed his wife about the plot, orchestrating the entire scheme with the help of his associates.
Taslima had previously come under the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) scrutiny regarding an attack on their team in Sandeshkhali earlier in 2024, where she was interrogated for approximately 11 hours.
On January 5, 2024, an ED team visited Agarhati in Sandeshkhali block I to probe the ration corruption case against Sheikh Shahjahan, the Executive Director of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad.
Shahjahan's supporters attacked the ED team during their operation. In February, widespread protests erupted in the region as villagers accused Shahjahan and his aides of land grabbing and sexual harassment.
Shahjahan, who evaded capture for 55 days following the attack on the ED team, was arrested on February 29, 2024.
