Kolkata, Oct 8 (NationPress) The law enforcement authorities apprehended two individuals on Wednesday related to the assault on Khagen Murmu, a BJP MP from West Bengal. This marks the initial arrest made by the police, a full 51 hours following the incident that occurred on Monday.
As per police reports, the two suspects were taken into custody from Nagrakata in the Jalpaiguri district, and they are currently being transported to Jalpaiguri town.
District Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Samir Ahmad stated, "Two individuals have been detained. The search is ongoing for the other suspects." However, the police have withheld the identities of the arrested individuals and have not disclosed any potential political affiliations.
BJP MP Khagen Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh encountered significant protests last Monday while attempting to deliver assistance to victims of flooding in Nagrakata.
A mob attacked the BJP leaders with sticks and shoes, and stones were thrown at their vehicle. Khagen Murmu suffered serious facial injuries, necessitating hospitalization for both leaders. While Shankar Ghosh was released on Wednesday, Khagen Murmu remains hospitalized and is scheduled for facial surgery, which may involve the insertion of a metal plate into his left cheekbone.
The BJP has filed a complaint against eight individuals at the Nagrakata Police Station in Jalpaiguri and protested outside the police station, demanding justice for the incident. However, the remaining suspects have not yet been apprehended.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and others, visited him in the hospital.
