Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday, 14 September 2026, announced that the state government will organise a two-day Hindi Sahitya Samagam in Patna to mark Hindi Diwas and advance the literary and cultural reach of the language. Prominent Hindi writers, poets, scholars and litterateurs from across the country will be invited to the conclave.

CM Choudhary on Hindi's Identity and Legacy

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Choudhary said Hindi is far more than a medium of communication — it is, he argued, an expression of the country's identity, culture, civilisation and rich literary heritage. He emphasised that the language deserves sustained respect and recognition, and that continuous efforts must be made to promote and expand its use.

Choudhary pointed out that Hindi ranks among the world's most widely spoken languages, placing third globally by number of speakers, and described it as an integral thread running through India's social and cultural life.

Bihar's Literary Contribution to Hindi

The Chief Minister highlighted Bihar's historically significant role in enriching Hindi literature. He recalled the contributions of towering literary figures — Vidyapati, 'Rashtrakavi' Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' and 'Jan-Kavi' Nagarjun — stating that their works elevated Hindi literature to new heights and provided enduring direction to society.

Notably, Bihar has produced some of the most celebrated voices in Hindi letters, and Choudhary's invocation of these names underscored the state's intent to reclaim that cultural prestige through the proposed samagam. Officials were directed to complete all preparations within the stipulated timeframe. 'Hindi Diwas instils in us a sense of both pride and responsibility towards our language,' Choudhary said at the event.

Flood Crisis: Centre to Send Assessment Team

Separately, Choudhary addressed Bihar's recurring flood problem, saying the state government was working continuously towards a permanent solution. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remained attentive to the flood situation even while engaged in international commitments, including the BRICS summit.

According to Choudhary, a Central team led by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan would visit Bihar to assess flood damage and evaluate the situation on the ground. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of river conservation and effective water management, calling Bihar's rivers the backbone of the state's life and economy.

He underlined the need for a long-term strategy covering river interlinking, conservation, water management and flood control, with the government focused on minimising loss of life and property in the interim.

Official Language Magazine Launched

During the programme, Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, welcomed Chief Minister Choudhary with a green plant, an angavastra and two books — Maila Anchal and Dinkar Ki Diary. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also launched the state's official language magazine, adding a symbolic dimension to the Hindi Diwas observance.

With the samagam preparations now formally set in motion, Bihar is positioning itself as a hub for Hindi literary discourse — and the event's success will depend on how swiftly officials can mobilise a credible lineup of national voices.
