Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress clashed on Thursday, 23 July on Harmu Road in Ranchi, turning the stretch outside the Jharkhand BJP state headquarters into a flashpoint, as a Congress march over the NEET paper leak controversy descended into a volatile face-off marked by egg and tomato hurling. Heavy police deployment eventually contained the situation, but not before traffic on one of Ranchi's key arteries was brought to a standstill.

How the Confrontation Unfolded

Thousands of Congress workers marched toward the BJP's state office on Harmu Road, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and accountability in the alleged NEET paper leak case. The administration erected multiple layers of barricades roughly 100 metres short of the BJP office, halting the march before it could reach its target.

As demonstrators reportedly attempted to dismantle the barricades, pushing and jostling broke out between Congress workers and security personnel. Police ultimately held the line and prevented protesters from advancing further.

Eggs, Tomatoes and a Fire Brigade Vehicle

A large contingent of BJP supporters had simultaneously gathered outside the party office, raising slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the opposition. When workers from both sides came face-to-face, the atmosphere turned charged. Eggs, tomatoes, and water bottles were hurled by rival groups.

In a dramatic escalation, some BJP workers allegedly climbed atop a parked fire brigade vehicle and threw tomatoes and eggs at the Congress protesters below. Congress workers reportedly retaliated in kind, producing chaotic scenes on the road.

Security Lockdown and Traffic Disruption

Authorities responded by converting the Harmu Road area and adjoining localities into a security zone. Rapid action units, police personnel, and senior administrative officials were deployed to keep the two groups separated and restore order. Traffic on Harmu Road was severely disrupted, with long vehicle queues forming before traffic police diverted commuters through alternative routes.

A Pattern of Escalating Tensions

Thursday's clash did not occur in isolation. Just a day earlier, BJP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers had staged a protest outside the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) office over alleged irregularities in the 14th JPSC preliminary examination. BJP workers had subsequently marched toward the Congress office, stoking inter-party tensions. The NEET protest on Thursday further intensified what has become a pattern of street-level political confrontation in the state.

With both parties now engaged in tit-for-tat mobilisations across Ranchi, the political temperature in Jharkhand is unlikely to cool in the near term — particularly as the national NEET controversy continues to fuel opposition pressure on the Centre.
