Chennai, June 4 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin sharply criticized the BJP-led Union government on Wednesday, accusing them of a calculated scheme to undermine Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament through the upcoming delimitation process.
Stalin’s comments followed the Centre's decision to delay the Census until 2027—the first after 2026, which is supposed to initiate the next delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies as mandated by the Constitution.
In a post on the social media platform X, Stalin stated: "According to the Constitution, a new delimitation must occur following the first Census after 2026. By pushing the Census to 2027, the BJP has explicitly revealed its intention to reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament. I had warned about this threat long ago, and now it is evident. This is nothing less than a betrayal."
He further accused AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) of complicity in this “plot” by choosing to remain silent.
“By siding with the BJP, EPS has opted for silence and has thus become an accomplice in this betrayal. His submission to Delhi's control is now clear. He is exposed before the people of Tamil Nadu,” he remarked.
The DMK leader maintained that the people of Tamil Nadu are unified in demanding a fair and just delimitation process that does not penalize states effectively implementing population control measures.
“We stand united in our call for an equitable delimitation. The Union government owes us a clear and transparent explanation. Tamil Nadu will not tolerate any injustice,” he asserted.
The delimitation issue has emerged as a significant political flashpoint, especially for southern states like Tamil Nadu, where population growth has stabilized. Leaders in the south have long feared that relying solely on population for representation would disproportionately empower the North, effectively punishing states that have succeeded in development and family planning. Stalin’s comments are likely to escalate regional resistance against the BJP’s centralized policies as the 2026 Assembly elections and the next general elections approach.
