New Delhi, May 29 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended two individuals, including an Office Assistant and Verification Officer at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Lower Parel, Mumbai, along with an agent, in connection with a scheme involving the issuance of passports based on fraudulent documents in exchange for bribes.
The CBI initiated an investigation against the Office Assistant/Verification Officer at PSK, Lower Parel, Mumbai, and various private individuals engaged as passport agents.
According to a report released by the CBI's office in Delhi, during the period of 2023-2024, the implicated officer conspired with other private individuals to gain unlawful advantages through passport-related services.
In collaboration with the agent and other unidentified individuals, the accused official facilitated the issuance of fraudulent passports to applicants by utilizing forged documents.
Investigations revealed that seven unidentified individuals posing as applicants submitted forged documents including copies of Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, bank statements, and birth certificates as proof of identity and address to the Passport Office.
Upon investigation, all submitted documents were confirmed to be fake.
Furthermore, communications between the accused public servant and the agent indicated discussions regarding the payments for these fraudulent passport applications.
The CBI's press release stated that further investigation uncovered that the mobile numbers provided by the applicants in their passport applications were disconnected.
Although 'Police Verification' was conducted post-issuance of these passports under the Tatkaal Scheme (which had been waived during the passport issuance), the findings were negative, showing that the addresses given in the passport applications were false.
As the accused showed evasiveness and failed to cooperate during the investigation, both were subsequently arrested,” the press note stated.
The two detainees were presented before the Special CBI Court in Mumbai and have been remanded to police custody for five days until June 2.
The CBI has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing in this matter.
