New Delhi, May 27 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially registered an FIR and initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Chief Engineer of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL). This action follows allegations from the family regarding harassment from his superiors and claims of abetment to suicide, as confirmed by an official on Tuesday.
The inquiry into the demise of Vimal Negi, the HPPCL Chief Engineer-cum-General Manager from Kinnaur district, was prompted by a directive from the Himachal Pradesh High Court after an FIR was filed on Monday.
Negi’s body was discovered in the Bhakra Dam within Bilaspur district on March 18, following his family's report of him missing on March 10.
His spouse, Kiran, accused Desh Raj, the Director (Electrical), among others, of harassing her husband and contributing to his suicide by compelling him to work late hours without any days off.
In the FIR lodged at a police station in New Shimla on March 19, Kiran claimed her husband faced threats of a disciplinary inquiry from his superiors.
While filing a new FIR under sections addressing abetment to suicide and common intention, the CBI noted that Kiran Negi “has alleged that her husband endured harassment for the last six months, particularly from Desh Raj, the Director (Electrical) and Managing Director of the Power Corporation.”
The CBI FIR indicated that “The High Court of Himachal Pradesh at Shimla in CWP No 6508 of 2025 issued an order on May 23, 2025, for the transfer of FIR No 09/2025 dated March 19, 2025, U/s 108 and 3(5) of BNS, Police Station-New Shimla to the CBI.”
This transfer to the federal investigative agency is perceived as a setback for the state government, which has faced political criticism for allegedly attempting to protect the accused.
