Agartala, July 19 (NationPress) The ancient 'Ker Puja' took place in Tripura on Saturday, observed with numerous traditional restrictions.
In line with the customs of the 'Ker Puja', activities such as death, birth, or even recreation are strictly forbidden within the designated areas of the worship ground. This annual celebration, which also occurs in several other northeastern states and in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, is conducted by the indigenous tribal community and involves complex, age-old rituals aimed at promoting the welfare of the populace and dispelling negative energies.
Preparation and rituals began late Friday night, culminating in the actual 'Ker Puja' on Saturday.
Typically, 'Ker Puja' is celebrated about two weeks following the conclusion of the Kharchi Puja, where 14 deities are venerated simultaneously.
The week-long Kharchi Puja took place at Puran Habeli, the historic capital of the former princely state, now referred to as Khayerpur, located about 8 km north of Agartala.
As per the established traditions and regulations regarding the puja and its associated ceremonies, no pregnant women or individuals in critical health are permitted within the worship areas, as designated by the District Magistrates through formal gazette notifications and public campaigns.
Elder tribal leaders have noted that anyone who breaches these customs must pay a penalty, and the Ker Puja must restart from the beginning.
Sponsored by the state government, both 'Ker Puja' and 'Kharchi Puja' are significant traditional events that have persisted for centuries in Tripura.
The term 'Ker' translates to "specified area" in the tribal Kokborok language. According to the gazette notification, "The puja rituals commenced at 10 p.m. on Friday night and will proceed continuously for over 31 hours."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP president J.P. Nadda, extended their greetings to the people of Tripura during the 'Ker Puja'.
In a post on X, Home Minister Shah conveyed, "Warm greetings on the occasion of Ker Puja to our sisters and brothers of Tripura. May this sacred festival enhance the state and lead to new levels of prosperity and well-being. Wishing peace and ongoing progress for the people of Tripura."
Union Minister Nadda also shared, "On the auspicious occasion of Ker Puja, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all my brothers and sisters of Tripura. May this sacred festival fortify the ties of unity and brotherhood among us all, bringing peace and prosperity to every life. Wishing you a joyful and blessed Ker Puja."
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, accompanied by state Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar, observed the 'Ker Puja' from outside the designated areas.
Afterward, the Chief Minister informed the media that the 'Ker Puja' is an annual celebration organized by the indigenous tribes for the goodwill and welfare of the community.
