The incident involved a double-decker sleeper bus that was carrying approximately 50 pilgrims from Chhattisgarh who were returning from a religious pilgrimage to Ayodhya.
As per reports from local police, the bus collided with a trailer truck while attempting to overtake it around 5 a.m.
The collision was so intense that the front of the bus was utterly crushed, resulting in the instant deaths of four passengers and leaving at least six others in critical condition.
Chief Minister Sai expressed his condolences to the grieving families and pledged that the state government would provide all necessary assistance to the injured and the families of those who lost their lives.
“This is a devastating loss for our state. The devotees embarked on a spiritual journey, making the tragic ending all the more painful,” he stated.
The deceased included pilgrims from Kanker district in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, namely Asha Bhawal (38), Rekha Bernik (40), Gulab (35), and the bus driver Deepak (40).
The group had commenced their pilgrimage on September 7, visiting holy sites such as Amarkantak, Maihar Devi, Chitrakoot, Vrindavan, and Ayodhya.
They were heading towards Varanasi when the accident occurred.
Emergency services, supported by local residents, quickly arrived at the scene and transported the wounded to the district hospital in Jaunpur.
Authorities have confiscated both the bus and the truck involved, and an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the precise cause of the incident.
The tragedy has cast a shadow of grief over the area, as many mourn the loss of lives during what was meant to be a sacred journey.
The Chhattisgarh government is working in cooperation with Uttar Pradesh officials to ensure appropriate medical care for the injured and the safe return of the remaining passengers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced highway safety and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
