Sixty-five villages in Uttarakhand's Purola constituency share a single sacred centre — the Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple at Danda Devarana. Now, that centre is getting a formal upgrade. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has sanctioned ₹1.79 crore under the Mukhyamantri Ghoshna (Chief Minister's Announcement) scheme for the beautification and infrastructure development of the ancient shrine, in a meeting held on Tuesday, 11 August 2026 at the Chief Minister's residence, Mukhya Sevak Sadan, Dehradun.

A temple of 65 villages gets its due

Purola MLA Durgeshwar Lal called on CM Dhami to formally express gratitude for the fund sanction, describing the Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple as the primary seat of faith for the villages of the Villa Naugaon area under Purola assembly constituency. 'A large number of devotees have deep religious and cultural ties to this temple,' Lal said, adding that better infrastructure would improve the experience for pilgrims and strengthen the region's religious identity.

The sanctioned amount will fund a range of beautification and development works within the temple complex — pathways, amenity facilities, and structural improvements that the site, drawing pilgrims from dozens of Himalayan villages, has long needed.

State fair status for the Danda Devarana Mela

The temple fund is not the only recent state action here. MLA Lal also thanked CM Dhami for an earlier decision to grant state fair (Rajkiya Mela) status to the Danda Devarana Rudreshwar Mahadev Mela. That elevation gives the annual fair broader official recognition, unlocking state-level organisational support and placing a village-rooted tradition on the government's cultural calendar. Lal said the status would give 'new momentum to the preservation of folk culture, traditions, and religious heritage of the region.'

Dhami's broader cultural preservation pitch

CM Dhami framed the sanction within a wider state commitment. 'The state government is continuously working for the preservation of Uttarakhand's religious and cultural heritage,' he said, noting that alongside major pilgrimage destinations, 'local temples and fairs connected to faith and tradition' are receiving focused attention. He added that the state's rich culture and traditions are its 'distinct identity' and that their protection and promotion remain a government priority.

The meeting was attended by Narayan Singh Chauhan, central president of the Rudreshwar Temple Committee and former District Panchayat president; BJP leaders Jaganmohan Chand and Sardar Singh Rana; former Mandal president Bachan Chauhan; and current Mandal president Anil Chauhan, among others.

Pattern: Uttarakhand's shrine-to-shrine development push

The Danda Devarana sanction fits a consistent pattern under the Dhami government — directing state funds not just to marquee pilgrimage circuits like the Char Dham, but to smaller, community-level shrines that anchor local identity in Uttarakhand's dispersed Himalayan villages. It is a model that blends cultural politics with genuine grassroots demand: for millions of hill residents, the local temple is not a tourist attraction but the social and spiritual hub of daily life.

For a state whose economy leans heavily on religious tourism, investing in the full pyramid of sacred sites — from the Char Dham at the top to the village shrine at the base — is both cultural stewardship and economic strategy. The Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple, relatively unknown outside Purola, just moved one rung higher on that pyramid.
