Patna, July 19 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, conducted an evaluation of the increasing Ganga water levels in Patna on Saturday, prompted by significant rainfall, and urged officials to stay vigilant.
He instructed the officials to take immediate actions for flood prevention in Patna.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of the embankments to identify any vulnerabilities or breaches promptly and ensure swift responses.
Accompanying CM Nitish were high-ranking officials, including Principal Secretary to CM Dipak Kumar, Secretary to CM Kumar Ravi, Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Patna Divisional Commissioner Chandrashekher Singh, Patna District Magistrate Tyagarajan S.M., and Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma.
The inspection commenced at Digha Ghat and extended along the JP Ganga Path to Didarganj, where he assessed the water levels and the state of the embankments.
The rise in the Ganga's water level in Patna is attributed to heavy rains in the tributary catchment areas, including the Son River.
Moreover, intense rainfall in Nepal has caused a surge in several other rivers across Bihar.
At Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj, the Gandak River was nearing the danger mark, while the Kosi River at Baltara in Khagaria was also at a critical level. The Bagmati River at various locations, including Sonakhan (Sitamarhi), Dubbadhar (Sheohar), and Kamla Balan were flowing below the danger threshold.
In the Gaya district, the Falgu and Niranjana rivers have exceeded danger levels, raising alarms for flooding in low-lying regions.
The water level of the Falgu River has risen to 112.86 meters, surpassing the high flood marker of 112.36 meters.
The government of Bihar has activated its Disaster and Water Resources Departments to remain alert and implement preventive measures as the monsoon rains persist.
