Kozhikode, Oct 21 (NationPress) Tension escalated in Kerala's Kozhikode on Tuesday as protests from traders, workers, and members of opposition parties against the relocation of the Palayam Market to Kalluthankadavu turned violent.
The unrest began just prior to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s planned inauguration of the new market complex.
Protesters, including traders and unions aligned with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), were met with criticism from CM Vijayan during his address before he handed over the keys to the new shops.
Amidst the turmoil, CM Vijayan expressed disbelief at the ongoing drama. “I fail to understand why some individuals refuse to recognize the positive aspects. The good initiatives are being overlooked for selfish reasons by certain groups. It’s clear that the Congress-led UDF is stagnating, but they must remember that the public is watching closely,” he stated.
A confrontation emerged between supporters and detractors of the relocation, resulting in a brief scuffle necessitating police intervention.
Opponents of the shift accused the Kozhikode Corporation of proceeding without adequate consultation, while proponents argued it was essential for reducing congestion in the city center and modernizing infrastructure.
The Corporation has been planning this relocation for almost a decade, citing the need to enhance facilities and tackle chronic traffic issues in the Palayam area.
Traders contend that the new location at Kalluthankadavu, situated further from the central bus station, will lead to a decline in their regular clientele reliant on convenient access for daily shopping.
“The rental and deposit costs for shops in the new complex are excessively high, making it unfeasible for small vendors. Additionally, the amenities are substandard, lacking adequate ventilation, and posing a flood risk in the new structure,” a group of protesters remarked.
Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan alleged that the civic body harbors a “hidden agenda” to transform the Palayam site into a township via an agreement with a private corporation.
However, the Corporation dismissed these allegations, with Deputy Mayor C.P. Moinkutty asserting that opponents were “misleading the public” and overstating the conditions of the old market, stating that discussions with protesters would continue.
CM Vijayan departed the venue promptly after the official inauguration of the new market.
In light of ongoing protests, police are maintaining surveillance at the market.
