A police inspector who fell leading a crackdown on hardened criminals in western Uttar Pradesh has become the first officer in the state force's history to be decorated with the Kirti Chakra — India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to the posthumous honour on Independence Day, 15 August 2026, calling it a moment of pride for every police officer and every resident of the state.

Inspector Sunil Kumar of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) was killed in action on 20 January 2025 in Shamli district while leading an operation against what the Chief Minister described as 'durdant aparadhiyon' — dangerous criminals. He attained martyrdom, in the official phrasing, on the path of duty: 'kartavya path par veergati ko prapt hue.'

A first for Uttar Pradesh Police in its entire history

The Kirti Chakra, instituted in 1960, ranks just below the Ashoka Chakra and is awarded for conspicuous acts of bravery in the face of the enemy — or in circumstances analogous to war. Its conferral has historically been concentrated on personnel from central armed forces and paramilitary units. CM Yogi underscored that no UP Police officer had ever received the decoration before, framing the posthumous award as a national acknowledgement of the state force's sacrificial tradition.

'This honour is a national salutation to the Uttar Pradesh Police's tradition of sacrifice, devotion to duty, and resolve to serve the nation,' the Chief Minister wrote, offering his condolences to Inspector Kumar's bereaved family.

Shamli encounter and the STF's anti-crime campaign

The UP STF is the state's specialist anti-crime and anti-terror unit, deployed against organised criminal networks that have long operated across the Gangetic plain. Shamli, in the state's western belt, has seen sustained enforcement pressure in recent years as part of a broader crackdown on gang activity. Inspector Kumar's operation placed him at the sharp end of that campaign — and cost him his life.

The Kirti Chakra is awarded posthumously when the act of bravery meets the threshold set by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The formal gazette notification from the Centre makes the recognition official and permanent.

The timing of CM Yogi's tribute — on Independence Day — amplifies its resonance. Gallantry awards in India are typically announced on Republic Day and Independence Day, making the occasion a natural moment to foreground the sacrifices of security personnel.
